What is Poncho?

Poncho empowers travellers and outdoor enthusiasts to book with confidence, free from the worry of weather uncertainty.
We recognize the disappointment of outdoor experiences getting spoiled by bad weather. With Poncho, you gain peace of mind knowing that, in case of bad weather, you will be refunded to compensate for your experience and enjoy indoor activities, a fancy restaurant or reschedule your plans.

How does it work?

Our technology platform gathers extensive global weather data daily to assess weather risks accurately and offer personalised weather guarantees at a fair price.
Once a weather guarantee is purchased, we notify our insurance partner to lock the coverage amount during the entire trip, ensuring we’re ready to refund you in case of bad weather.

How can I purchase a weather guarantee?

You can add a weather guarantee directly at checkout when booking with any of our partner platforms. If you’re interested in getting a weather guarantee through a provider that’s not currently one of our partners, please reach out to us at hello@useponcho.com . We’re always looking to expand our offerings to meet your needs.

What are the benefits of offering weather guarantees to my clients?

Weather guarantees provide a competitive advantage, increasing customer satisfaction and booking confidence. This can boost your revenue through higher conversion rates and increased repeat business.

Who pays for weather guarantees?

You can offer it as an optional extra at checkout, where clients pay individually, or include it in all bookings and receive a monthly invoice from us.

How does the integration process work?

We provide a seamless integration with your existing systems thanks to our intuitive API. Soon, we will also offer SDKs and widgets to make it even easier. Our team supports you throughout the process to ensure a smooth rollout.

What if my booking system relies on a third party provider?

If your system depends on a third party provider, we will collaborate with them to develop a customised plugin that integrates seamlessly into your checkout process.

I don't sell online, can I still offer weather guarantees to my customers?

Yes! We provide a web interface for your staff to offer weather guarantees directly at the point of sale.

Are there any upfront costs to start offering weather guarantees?

We do not charge any upfront costs. Our goal is to make the partnership as accessible as possible.

How long does it take before I can start offering weather guarantees?

Once our contract is signed, you can start offering weather guarantees immediately. We'll provide a branded web app tailored to your business, enabling clients to add weather guarantees to their bookings right away—even before the full integration into your checkout process is finalised.

Can we tailor the weather guarantees to fit our customers specific needs?

Absolutely. We offer five customizable parameters to tailor weather guarantees to your clients needs, and we can create multiple products for changing requirements.

Our Weather Guarantee

What constitutes bad weather?

Bad weather conditions are clearly defined in the coverage confirmation letter we send you. Typically, this includes precipitation exceeding 1.5mm per hour—enough to visibly wet the ground—or wind speeds surpassing 35km/h, strong enough to sway tree branches.

How can I file a claim?

No claim process is required. Our system automatically monitors real-time weather conditions and triggers refunds directly if the weather exceeds the predefined thresholds of the guarantee, as stated in your confirmation letter. This removes the hassle of filing claims.

How does Poncho verify the weather?

Our advanced technology collects weather data from satellites, radar, and reputable meteorological organisations including NOAA, ECMWF, and DWD. This approach ensures we provide a detailed and accurate real-time weather overview.
You are automatically notified if the weather conditions exceed the predefined thresholds of the guarantee, as stated in your confirmation letter.

What if I experience bad weather and I am not notified?

While it's uncommon, if you experience bad weather that wasn't detected by our system, we encourage you to contact us immediately at weather@useponcho.com or through WhatsApp. We will manually review the weather data including radar maps and satellite images and aim to resolve any issues by the next business day.

Is the weather data public?

While our platform itself is not publicly accessible, the weather data we use comes from public and reputable sources. We can provide information on these sources so you can independently verify the weather conditions if desired.

How is the refund amount calculated?

The refund is calculated based on the number of days with bad weather during the covered period. Not all days may be covered—some, known as retention days, are excluded to keep the weather guarantee affordable. The refund for each covered day is typically equal to the daily cost of the trip or activity.
All specific terms, including the definition of bad weather and any retention days, are detailed in the confirmation letter we send you.

How quickly are refunds processed?

Refunds are initiated as soon as you provide your bank account details, with the funds typically appearing in your accounts within two business days.

What is the maximum amount that can be covered?

Please note that the total covered amount cannot exceed the price paid for the booked trip or activity.

Can Poncho cover trips with multiple destinations?

Yes, our coverage is comprehensive and can accommodate multi-destination itineraries.

What kind of vacations / activities do you cover?

We provide refunds for all weather-dependent experiences, from city breaks, skiing, and golf to beach vacations and camping. And yes, we’ve got outdoor events like weddings, festivals, and family gatherings covered.
All we need is a destination and a date to offer a weather guarantee.

Do I have to cancel my trip or activity to be reimbursed?

No, cancellation is not necessary to receive a refund. The refund is intended to compensate for your disappointment (moral damage) as you did not get the value you paid for your experience.

What weather variables are covered by Poncho?

Currently, Poncho covers bad weather caused by wind or any forms of precipitation (rain, snow, hail, etc).
We plan to expand our coverage to include temperature and snow conditions very soon.
